Judd Gymnasia and Stitzer YMCA Center Receive Preservation Massachusetts Award
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 5, 2011 -- Springfield College’s newly renovated Judd Gymnasia, including the Stitzer YMCA Center, received the 2011 Paul E. Tsongas Award, at the Preservation Massachusetts awards dinner, on May 4, 2011, at the Copley Plaza Hotel, in Boston, Mass. The college was one of 21 awardees.
Announcing the selection, James W. Igoe, president of Preservation Management said, “This year’s Tsongas Award recipients, such as the Judd/Stitzer YMCA Center, truly demonstrate the versatility, viability and importance of preservation at our higher educational institutions.”
The awards recognize Massachusetts colleges, universities and preparatory schools for preservation of their historic resources for the benefit of future generations of students.
Accepting the award was Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, along with the project’s architect Stephen Jablonski, principal of Jablonski DeVriese Architects, and Steven F. McDonald, president of Erland Construction, Inc.
According to Flynn, “These renovations bring new life and purpose to Judd Gymnasia and support our mission of educating students in spirit, mind and body for leadership in service to others. We honor the proud past of this historic landmark by preserving and equipping it to serve present and future generations of students and alumni, and also YMCA professionals from throughout the world through the Stitzer YMCA Center.”
The awards dinner is widely regarded as the premier preservation event of the year in the commonwealth. More than 400 representatives of preservation, architecture, construction, development and business interests attended. The program included videos of the award-winning projects.
Judd Gymnasia is the most historic building at Springfield College. Originally built in 1894 and expanded in 1910, the red-brick Victorian structure underwent a complete renovation in 2010 to serve the college’s current programming while preserving the building’s historic character and many architectural details.
A central feature of Judd Gymnasia is the new Stitzer YMCA Center, a destination site for YMCA professionals and groups from around the world. It includes the national YMCA Hall of Fame, offices of the Association of YMCA Professionals, the Springfield College Office of YMCA Relations, and facilities for YMCA meetings and other programs.
Also housed in Judd Gymnasia are the Springfield College Museum, Archives and Special Collections, Office of Alumni Relations, two classrooms, lounges, and a large multipurpose space for student activities named Union West.
