School of Social Work Hosts New Student Orientation
The Springfield College School of Social Work hosted a new student orientation and reception on May 10. New students had the opportunity to meet each other and faculty members as well as current students, to learn more about their program of study, to begin considering field internship options, and to register for classes. SSW Student Group, Helpers Helping Helpers, Addresses Compassion Fatigue in Social Workers
A group of Social Work students have created a Facebook page designed to educated people about Compassion Fatigue in an effort to promote awareness and to provide others with an opportunity to lobby for social change. SSW Recognizes Field Supervisor of the Year
SSW has named Constance Johnson, LICSW, its Social Work Field Supervisor of the Year for 2011-2012. The award annually recognizes an outstanding community practitioner who works with the School of Social Work in providing field education for social work students. Francine Vecchiolla, Ph.D., Ann Roy, Ph.D., and Walter Mullin, Ph.D., faculty at the Springfield College School of Social Work, announced the release of their edited book, Competency-Based Social Work: An Integrated Approach to Decision Making.

SSW Faculty Member Participates in NYT's Sunday Dialogue
Joseph Wronka, Ph.D., took part in the New York Times discussion, "Sunday Dialogue: Do We Live in a Less Deadly Time, or Not?". His response focused on structural violence, which Wronka describes as, "a system placing profit over human need resulting in social problems like extreme poverty, lacks of security in old age, access to health care, and socially useful work at reasonable wages."
