Springfield College Receives Super 60 Award as Major Contributor to Regional Economy
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 4, 2009 – Springfield College was acknowledged as a 2009 Super 60 Award recipient by the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield (ACCGS) at the Super 60 Luncheon and Recognition Program, on Oct. 23, at Chez Josef, in Agawam, Mass.Announcing the 2009 winners, the ACCGS ranked Springfield College in third place in the total revenues category. The college has received the award several times in the past in recognition of its revenues and economic role within the community.
Responding to the announcement, Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn said, “It is a great pleasure for Springfield College to be recognized, once again, for its vital role in the region’s economy. Springfield College is one of the area’s largest employers and purchasers of local goods and services. Annually, events on our campus attract thousands of visitors to Springfield.
“In the past year, several major campus projects have enhanced our economic impact. We completed the largest campaign in Springfield College’s history, raising $44.5 million; opened a new Wellness and Recreation Complex, which has been cited as one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation; and began construction of a new Campus Union and renovated Beveridge Center.
“Beyond revenues, Springfield College also remains committed to improving the quality of life in the region through our many services. Annually, our students contribute more than 133,000 hours of volunteer service to our community. Grants that we leverage support a wide range of community programs, and our on-campus educational and leadership-development programs serve hundreds of local children each year.”
Nominating the college was the law firm of Cooley, Shrair, P.C., counsel to the college. Nominees are private institutions or companies with revenues of at least $1 million in the last fiscal year and which are based in Hampden or Hampshire counties or are ACCGS members.
The awards luncheon was sponsored by Health New England; Hampden Bank; Sullivan, Hayes & Quinn; Sovereign Nuvo Bank and Trust Co.; and Zasco Productions.
