Activist Linda Panetta to Speak at Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 8, 2007 – Linda Panetta, photojournalist, and social activist will speak about her work in Central America and the Middle East in a presentation entitled “Social Justice and Contemporary Society” on Monday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m., in Springfield College’s Marsh Memorial Chapel.

Panetta’s work focuses on cultural, environmental, and human rights issues, with emphasis on conflict zones including Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries. She is the founder of the School of the Americas Watch/Northeast, a grassroots organization concerned about the military training facility at Ft. Benning, Ga. She also is coordinator of the Jean Donovan Community Peace Center, which hosts the Mariposa Outreach Project, a mentoring program for survivors of torture and their families.

Panetta also has produced and directed “An Insider Speaks Out,” a short documentary film detailing the inner workings of the School of the Americas, including footage from South America and Ft. Benning.

The program is cosponsored by Springfield College’s Newman Community and the United Campus Ministry and Spiritual Life Center.
