Tony Brown In Free Public Program At Springfield College
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 24, 2006 --Tony Brown, host of the nation’s longest running black public affairs program “Tony Brown’s Journal” on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), will present “Sankofa: Look to the Past To Create the Future,” in a free public presentation Feb. 2, 2006, at 6 p.m., in Springfield College’s Appleton Auditorium of Fuller Arts Center. Brown also will answer questions and sign copies of his book, “What Mama Taught Me – The Seven Core Values of Life.”
Brown will discuss the importance of personal histories and histories of groups. His special expertise is in African-American history. He is the second speaker in the speakers’ tour established by the Cooperating Colleges of Greater Springfield in 2004. The series opened with comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory.
"Tony Brown's Journal," which is in its 26th season, is the second longest-running series on PBS. The “New York Daily News” selected it as one of the top 10 television programs presenting positive images of African Americans. The series features contemporary newsmakers and commentary on issues of special interest to the African-American community. This summer, he launched "Tony Brown's Chicago" with news, interviews, commentary and listener call-ins on WLS-AM.
Among the books which Brown has written are “Black Lies, White Lies: The Truth According to Tony Brown” and “Empower the People: Overthrow the Conspiracy That Is Stealing Your Money and Your Freedom.” He also has been a syndicated newspaper columnist, and he has written, directed and produced "The White Girl," an anti-drug movie referring to a street name for cocaine.
The winner of a Black Emmy award for distinguished achievement in the television industry, Brown also has garnered awards from Harvard University, the NAACP Hollywood Chapter, and other organizations for his work on PBS. He is the founder and was the first dean of the School of Communications at Howard University, and has received honorary degrees from several institutions of higher education. Throughout his career, he has led initiatives to increase the number of underrepresented groups with careers in the media. Brown received a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in psychiatric social work from Wayne State University in Detroit. He serves on the Board of Associates of the Harvard Foundation, the Board of Directors of the National Business League, and the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History. He also heads a scholarship committee for black American students at the American University of Paris.
