Free Public Visual & Performing Arts Programs at SC This Fall
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 1, 2005 -- Springfield College’s fall series of visual and performing arts programs open to the public free of charge will feature fine art exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, poetry readings, a dance concert, and a film festival.The free series poster is available by calling Professor Carol Mitchell at 748-3187.
Aug. 29- Oct. 7 Art Exhibition : “Recent Paintings" By: Laurie Kaplowitz “The human image has always been central to my work. I have used the figure thematically to embody what I consider to be the forces that most compel us: the power of our sensuality and sexuality; the place we occupy in this universe; and the order and structure of the natural world around us.” --Kaplowitz Reception: Sept. 25, 2 - 4 p.m. Gallery talk: Sept. 29, 10 a.m. William Blizard Gallery, Visual Arts Center Weekdays, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 6 Concert : “Mostly Chopin” By: Paul Bisaccia Internationally acclaimed pianist presents an evening of romantic piano music focusing on the preludes of Chopin, with additional selections from Liszt, Debussy, and recent works by SC Music Director Chris Haynes.
Bisaccia has become the most frequently requested pianist by listeners of beethoven.com; and his most recent special for public television, "Paul Bisaccia and the Great American Piano" has been hailed by the critics as "another sure-fire winner.” Seating is first-come for this highly anticipated concert. Early arrival recommended. Marsh Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 14 Theatrical Performance: “Pouring the Sun and Selected Pill Hill Stories” Written and Performed By: Jay O’Callahan "A man of elegance, wit and poetry." -- Time Magazine. O’Callahan performs selections from his very alive, funny, and deeply moving tales. One story explores struggles of a working class family in a steel city with no union. It focuses on a young woman who, like the iron in the blast furnace, is transformed by the fire of life.
The other takes place in a Yankee Protestant neighborhood near Boston with eccentric characters viewed through the eyes of a boy who is aware of the electric currents of religion, politics and class. "First rate theatre." --Washington Post Black Box Theatre, Woods Hall, 7:30 p.m. Suggested admission $5, students and seniors $2 (or contribution of choice)
Oct. 17 – Nov. 25 Art Exhibition : “Undomesticated” By: Pip Brant “My tablecloths are revitalized vintage relics from the Cold War years. On this found cloth the somnambulistic imagery is reworked with metaphors and materials that record new global disquiet.” -- Brant William Blizard Gallery, Visual Arts Center Weekdays, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 19 Reading : “Viet Nam: Poetry and Memoir” By Doug Anderson Award-winning author of three books of poems reads from a memoir in progress about the 1960s and the Viet Nam War, in which he was a medic. According to James Tate, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, "These are trenchant, wrenching poems. With artistry and honesty they perform an inquest into war and its corrosive after effects." Marsh Memorial Chapel, 7:30 p.m. Reception and book signing to follow.
Nov. 7 Film Festival: The Athlete in Film - “Seabiscuit” Springfield College’s one-year focus on the athlete in film opens with this Academy Award - nominated film, directed by Gary Ross, and starring Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, and Chris Cooper.
This moving tribute to the American spirit of determination, faith in the face of adversity, and hope for the underdog, is based on the true story of a remarkable horse and his jockey, trainer and owner. Introduction: “The Horseracing World” by Professor of Sports Journalism Dennis Gildea. Fuller Arts Center, Appleton Auditorium 7 p.m.
Nov. 10 - 13 Theatre presentation : “The Laramie Project” By Moisés Kaufman and the Members of Tectonic Theatre A breathtaking theatrical collage exploring the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a 21- year-old student who was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die near Laramie, Wyo. because he was gay.
This play, based on hundreds of interviews, chronicles the life of the town in the year after the murder and reveals both human depths of depravity and heights of compassion. Springfield College students, faculty, staff and neighbors portray more than 60 roles. Black Box Theatre, Woods Hall 2nd Flr. Nov. 18 - 20 Dance Concert : “An Evening of Dance” By: Springfield College faculty and students. Diverse program of ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, dance theatre and hip-hop including original choreography by guest artist Billbob Brown and SC faculty and students.
