The annual Weckwerth Lecture, which is the premiere scholarly event of the Springfield College Department of Sport Management and Recreation, focuses on emerging trends in the field of recreation as Americans have increasingly more time and options for leisure. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Since being named general manager of the Hartford Civic Center Coliseum and Exhibition Center in 1997, Brooks has added the management of Hartford Wolf Pack events and of Rentschler Field, UConn’s new 40,000-seat football stadium.
He has increased Civic Center concerts by bringing in such top talent as the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, Pavarotti and many other luminaries.

Brooks has increased the number of UConn men’s and women’s basketball games played at the Hartford Civic Center, and secured the commitment for the 2004 through 2009 Big East Women’s Basketball Championships.

Brooks began his career with MSG Network in 1985 and rose to senior vice president of program and production. Under his leadership, MSG Network won its first national CableAce Award and numerous New York Emmys.
He also initiated “Yes, Make it Count!” -MSG’s community outreach program, to assist children’s charities.

The Weckwerth Lecture is named in honor of Charles F. Weckwerth, distinguished Springfield College professor of humanics emeritus.
