Springfield College to Honor Veterans With Public Ceremony
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 5, 2003 -- Springfield College will pay tribute to past and present members of the armed services, especially members of its campus community and alumni, at its annual Veterans Day program on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m., on the campus' Administration Green.The program, with patriotic music, a presentation by the U.S. Coast guard Academy Drill Team, and keynote address by Lt. Gen. Carol Mutter, USMC (Ret.), will be open to the public free of charge.
Mutter achieved many firsts for women during her military career. She was the first woman to be qualified as Command Center Crew Commander/Space Director at a U.S. Space Command, first woman of general/flag rank to command a major deployable tactical command, first woman marine major general and senior woman in all the services at that time, and first woman nominated by the President of the United States for a three-star rank. She is currently a consultant on government contracts, chair of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, and serves in several military-related national activities.
Springfield College Singers will present the United States and Springfield College anthems, the Holyoke Firefighters Pipe Band will perform “Amazing Grace,” Jules Gaudreau will sing “God Bless the U.S.A.,” and Thomas Gotwals will play “Taps” on trumpet.
Springfield College student leaders will lay a wreath at the United States flagpole. Students who are officer candidates in the United States Army and Marine Corps will read the names of alumni who were killed in post-World War II conflicts and will toll a bell once after each 10 names. The college honors those who served in World War I, World War II, and post World War II military conflicts in three-year rotations. Raymond Sweeney will unveil a memorial plaque honoring Springfield College Alumnus Victor Ohanesian who served in the Korean Conflict and was killed in Vietnam.
The program will conclude with cake and hot cider in the Marsh Memorial.
