SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 4, 2003 -- Bernie Tolbert, the National Basketball Association’s vice president for security, will speak on “Security and Safety Considerations at Sport Venues” at Springfield College’s annual Weckwerth Lecture on Thursday, April 10, 2003, at 4:45 p.m., in the Townhouse Conference Room on the campus. Stadium safety has taken on new significance post 9-11 and during war. The annual Weckwerth Lecture, which is the premiere scholarly event of the Springfield College Department of Sport Management and Recreation, focuses on emerging trends in the field of recreation as Americans have increasingly more time and options for leisure. Open to the public free of charge, the lecture is named in honor of Charles F. Weckwerth, distinguished Springfield College professor of humanics emeritus. Tolbert joined the NBA following a distinguished 21-year career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. At different times, Tolbert was in charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Office and Buffalo, N.Y. Division. At FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., he held assignments, at different times, as chief of the Counterintelligence and Counterterrorism Training Unit, as an inspector in the Inspection Division, and as a supervisory special agent in the Intelligence Division. Early in his FBI career, he also served as a special agent in New York City. Tolbert recently volunteered his expertise to Springfield College students of recreation and sport management who created a game-day safety checklist as a resource for security directors of professional and college athletics facilities. Students researched security protocols and terrorist tactics and developed the 38-point checklist. They are now surveying National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I directors of athletics and security with a research instrument based upon the checklist. Next month, they plan to publish a report on the state of stadium security in those institutions. Tolbert has received many honors including the Black Achievers in Industry, Heroes of Public Housing, and Ebony and Ivory awards. At ceremonies at the White House in 2001, he received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Achievement as one of the U. S. Government’s top Senior Executives.
