Springfield College To Build Residence Hall
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 30, 2003 -- Springfield College will begin construction this summer of a new suite-style residence hall to house about 200 students beginning in September 2004.Plans are being drawn for a four-story brick building to be situated in a grassy area facing the college’s Townhouses student residence on Alden Street. The new residence will include about 40 units, each with four or six single bedrooms, one or two baths, living room, kitchen, and dining area. It will be air-conditioned and each student’s room will contain telephone, cable television, and Internet connections.
According to Springfield College President Richard B. Flynn, “Given the traditional residential character of our main campus, and our strong current enrollment trends, this is an appropriate time to construct a new residence hall as part of our ongoing program of facilities improvements. This new residence hall will support and enhance our efforts to continue to attract top students to our campus.”
In the past two years, the college completed major renovations of Wilbraham Hall, the Brennan Center, and the Office of Admissions; constructed a new president’s house; and completed several other improvements to campus facilities and grounds.
Although building plans are still being developed, the college estimates the cost of the new residence hall at between $9 million and $11 million. The college plans to finance construction through issuance of tax-exempt revenue bonds.
