National Social Workers President To Speak At Springfield College
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 12, 2003 -- The president-elect of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), Gary Bailey, will discuss the role of social workers in a multicultural environment and the relationship between social justice and social work practice at the Springfield College School of Social Work’s celebration of National Social Work Month, Thursday, March 27, 2003, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the college’s Brennan Center, 145 Island Pond Road, Springfield.Bailey is an assistant professor at Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work and an adjunct assistant professor at the Boston University School of Public Health. In 1998, both the NASW and its Massachusetts chapter named him Social Worker of the Year. He has received numerous awards in his field, and consults locally, nationally and internationally on workplace diversity, board and staff development, cultural competence, and elder issues.
Social workers attending the program will qualify for 1.5 continuing education units. Cosponsored by Valley Psychiatric Services of Springfield and Worcester, Massachusetts, the event will be open to the public free of charge. Off-street parking will be available and refreshments will be served.
The Springfield College School of Social Work offers master’s degree programs that can be completed part-time in three years with weekend classes, or full-time in two years on weekdays. An advanced standing master of social work program is available to qualified graduates of bachelor of social work programs that are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
In conjunction with Western New England College School of Law, the school also offers a combined master of social work/juris doctorate four-year program. Additionally, for persons with master's degrees in social work, nursing, school counseling, mental health and other fields, a post-master's certificate program in advanced social work practice with children and adolescents is available with classes on 15 Thursday evenings each in spring and fall for 90 continuing education units.
