Art Exhibition:“First Light: Inner and Outer Landscapes”
Watercolors and poems by Margaret Lloyd, Ph.D., Springfield College professor of English
William Blizard Gallery*
“My paintings occupy the boundary between the known and the unknown. I work wholly from the imagination, whether the completed image refers to a place in the real world or an entirely new and unknown place, an interior landscape. While most of the paintings stand alone, a few are framed with my poetry. Some of the watercolors are closely connected to my family origins in Wales and to a deeper mythological past visible in the Welsh landscape.” - Margaret Lloyd

Film Event:“Moneyball”
Starring Brad Pitt
"Moneyball” is a smart, intense, and moving film that isn't so much about sports as about the war between intuition and statistics." – Roger Ebert, film critic. Brad Pitt, in one of his best performances, plays Billy Beane, former player and general manager for the Oakland Athletics. As poorer teams were continually unable to sign expensive superstar players, or as Beane states it, "We're the last dog bowl in the room, and you know what happens to the runt of the litter? He dies," he and Yale graduate Peter Brant (played by Jonah Hill) put together a team of unconventional ballplayers, based on a revolutionary form of statistical analysis (Sabermetrics). The team’s success transformed baseball and led to the rise of a new kind of general manager (e.g., Theo Epstein). Add the acting talent of Phillip Seymour Hoffman as crusty "old-school" team manager Art Howe and some tension-filled game play, and you have an Academy Award-contending film. As film critic Rex Reed said, "This is a subtle, elegant and altogether triumphant film told with an artistry and affection that is positively thrilling."
Marty Dobrow, Springfield College associate professor of communications, will introduce the film and lead a question-and-answer session after the showing. A lifelong baseball fan and author of “Knocking on Heaven's Door: Six Minor Leaguers in Search of the Baseball Dream,” Dobrow is also a columnist for ESPNBoston.com.

By: Will Eno
Director: Martin Shell, professor of theater arts
In this deeply moving and funny new play, Mary Sawnson has just moved to Middletown, eager to start a family and enjoy the neighborly bonds a small town promises. When she befriends longtime resident John Dodge, she discovers complications -- neighbors are near strangers and moments of honest connection are fleeting. This powerful and poignant portrait of everyday life and the deep human mysteries and longings within us all, is a remarkable new play from one of the finest young theatrical voices.
