The Special Education graduate program at Springfield College leads to initial licensure in Teacher of Students With Moderate Disabilities (TSMD). The program prepares teachers to work effectively with students with mild to moderate disabilities. Students applying for this program must already possess Massachusetts Licensure as an Elementary or Secondary Teacher or be simultaneously enrolled in a Springfield College graduate-level licensure program. Certain courses (in child development and an introduction to special education) are also required. The interdisciplinary program offers a combination of academic coursework and field experiences taken concurrently, offering students the opportunity to use their practical experiences to deepen their understanding of the theories and skills being taught in the college classroom.
