About the Office of Educator Preparation and Licensure
All of the educator preparation programs integrate coursework in a specific content area with education methods coursework and substantial fieldwork experiences in local urban and suburban school settings. Throughout their course of study, students are welcomed into local schools, where they test and hone their skills by observing, tutoring, and teaching with the guidance and supervision of professionals. The scope and length of these experiences is clearly one of our strengths. In addition, many of our students take advantage of opportunities for community service. These experiences include after-school tutoring, art and outdoor adventure programs, and recreation and sports programs for school aged children. The Office of Educator Preparation is responsible for securing and overseeing the practicum and clinical experiences of students. Once students have met all program requirements, they are eligible to apply for placement.
The student maintains contact throughout the experience with the college supervisor by journaling daily. This affords the student the opportunity to communicate directly with the supervisor, ask questions and reflect on the day's lessons. Students are required to maintain a teaching portfolio to document and demonstrate their teaching standards. Practicum students attend various seminars that provide support and information throughout the practicum experience.
The Office of Educator Preparation provides support in the Massachusetts state licensure process. Students apply directly to the state to obtain licensure.
All educator preparation programs offered at Springfield College are State of Massachusetts and NASDTEC approved.
