National Social Work Honor Society

Phi Alpha Induction Ceremony

Thirty-one students were inducted into Phi Alpha Honor Society, on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. Dean Vecchiolla welcomed students and their guests, giving an overview of the program requirements for students enrolled in Springfield College School of Social Work. Robert Johanson Wolff, President of the School of Social Work Student Organization, introduced Phi Alpha as the national social work honor society. Student Organization Officers conducted the induction, leading new members in the recitation of the pledge, and then calling each new member to receive a certificate and pin.

The Frank Joseph Vecchiolla and William Coolidge Reid Scholarship was awarded to Peter Cofoni for Social Work Practice with Children and Families, and to Levinia Burgess for Social Work Practice in Gerontology.

The ceremony gave families, friends, and faculty the opportunity to recognize the academic achievement of new members of Phi Alpha. In order to join Springfield College School of Social Work’s chapter of Phi Alpha, Nu Tau, students must have completed 16 academic credits, and maintained a 3.9 grade point average. A reception followed the ceremony.

In the spring of each year, students submit articles for review by faculty who teach in the content areas of the article. For fair and impartial reviewing, the name of the writer was removed from the submission piece for the review process.

The goals of the journal are to demonstrate the breadth of practice approached and theories that the advanced generalist social work practitioner employs as well as to give students the opportunity to publish their writing.
