NSO Traditions
The following traditions have previously been upheld and asserted by all upper-class students:- All campus community members extend greetings (say “hello”) to everyone they meet on campus.
- All campus community members walk on the pathways instead of the grass, because at Springfield College we don’t cut corners. (This excludes the Senior Walk.)
- Upper-class students are given preference when choosing residence hall rooms.
- The spring event called STI-YU-KA is named after a Native American dance that celebrates the transition from childhood to adulthood.
- It is tradition for all campus community members to attend as many campus programs and events as possible.
- Stepping Up Day is held every spring. At this time, each class president receives an appropriate symbol from the president of the next higher class and "steps up" to the next class.
- New student beanies/transfer hats are worn at all times on campus from check-in through the closing banquet.
- Name tags are worn from check-in until immediately following the closing banquet.
- New students are not to use the Senior Walk during NSO from check-in through the closing banquet.
- New students build life-long friendships during NSO.
