September 27, 2007 - The Beginning.
It’s been quite a first month for the Academic Success Center. In the middle of July when I first visited the Springfield College, Bemis was an empty construction zone. It required a vivid imagination to see a lively, engaging academic hub, but, now one month after the ASC began, the center has manifested from the imaginations of all those who promoted the idea of the Academic Success Center into a tangible reality. Furniture, computers, phones and reference materials have been arriving. Numerous student employees have been hired as tutors and academic coaches. Schedules for math and writing staff have been drafted. The professional staff members have moved into their new offices and most importantly the students seeking support have appeared. First, there were only drips and trickles, but now we have a steady stream of students who are choosing to be proactive and seek out our services.

The Name Game - If some of you are wondering what all our recent name changes are about, here is an explanation. The College has brought three crucial student supports together under the auspices of the Academic Success Center. They were formerly called the Math Lab, Writing Center and Office of Student Support Services. Upon establishing the Academic Success Center, we have removed the place-names of Writing Center, Math Lab and Office of Student Support Services. The reason for this is it could be confusing to have a lab, an office and another center encompassed inside the Academic Success Center. To this end, our main department is the Academic Success Center and the services we offer are Learning Support Services, Math Support Services and Writing Support Services. This change in nomenclature promotes the idea that all of us have separate areas of expertise and are working collectively as members of the ASC to support our students’ academic growth.

Good Things to Come - There are numerous projects, plans and ideas brewing for the ASC. With the exciting and sweeping charge of promoting academic excellence for all Springfield College students, it’s hard to get all the brainstorms and epiphanies down on paper. Over this year, we will be refining the services we offer as well as looking to expand to new areas of academic support as well. Here is a brief list of some upcoming projects:
On Humanics In Action Day, Vicki Anderson and a crew of volunteers worked on logo and promotional ideas for the ASC. The ideas they generated were really great, creative approaches that you will hear more about in the future. We are also planning an Open House in October to celebrate our start up and welcome the Springfield College community to the ASC. We are working to promote information about our services and key information through the updating and creation of several pages on the College website. We’ll keep you updated as time goes on.
