SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE PROF. HEADLEY WINS NIH GRANT TO CONDUCT RESEARCH ON EXERCISE FOR KIDNEY PATIENTSHeart attack and stroke are by far the greatest killers of people with chronic kidney disease, and Professor of Exercise Science Samuel Headley has a new $228,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate if exercise can improve the odds. SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE NAMED TO HONOR ROLL OF “BEST NEIGHBOR” COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
Springfield College has been named to the honor roll of “best neighbor colleges and universities” in the United States in a new report by Evan S. Dobelle, president of Westfield State College, delivered at the 15th annual conference of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities on Oct. 12, 2009. Read more.
COLLEGE FEATURED IN NEW MUSEUMSpringfield College is the only educational institution featured in the new Museum of Springfield History, which opened on Oct. 10. The museum features a number of exhibits that describe Springfield’s development as a manufacturing center, focusing on its industries, transportation, inventions, education, and more, and includes other exhibits on the Indian Motorcycle Company, Milton Bradley, and Gee Bee planes. For the twelfth annual Humanics in Action Day, Springfield College’s students, faculty, and staff appeared throughout the city in gold and maroon tee shirts to perform a day of concentrated community service. Read more

BIG SECOND HALF LEADS FOOTBALL PAST HARTWICK, 35-7
After giving up the opening touchdown of the game, the football team scored 35 unanswered points en route to a 35-7 win at Hartwick in Empire 8 action. Baldwin Cunningham rushed for 113 yards on just 11 carries as the Pride improved to 6-1, 2-1 in league play this year. Read more.
FIELD HOCKEY BLANKS WPI, 3-0, FOR IMPORTANT NEWMAC WIN
The field hockey team netted a goal in the opening two minutes and never looked back as it blanked WPI, 3-0, in a crucial New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on a rainy Stagg Field. Read more.
JAHODA PACES WOMEN'S SOCCER TO 4-0 WIN AT WPI
Jen Jahoda assisted on a pair of Springfield goals just 1:15 apart midway through the first half to spark the Pride to a 4-0 shutout over host WPI in a NEWMAC women’s soccer contest. With the win, Springfield ups its record to 9-4-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference action while WPI drops to 7-10 on the year and 3-5 in NEWMAC play. Read more.
DIPAOLO PACES WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TO 11TH-PLACE FINISH AT UALBANY INVITATIONAL
Led by Amanda DiPaolo’s seventh-place finish, the women’s cross country team finished 11th out of 24 teams competing at the UAlbany Invitational. Read more.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES 12TH AT UALBANY INVITATIONAL
The men’s cross country team finished 12th out of 24 teams at the UAlbany Invitational. Zach Pietras was the top finisher for the Pride in the race as he took 43rd in 25:54.9. Read more.
LIVELY POWERS WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PAST BABSON, 3-1
Led by a career-best performance from Heather Lively, the women's volleyball team downed visiting Babson, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action at Blake Arena. Read more.
DIFRANCO LEADS GOLF TO 7TH-PLACE FINISH AT ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Craig DiFranco fired a two round score of 149 to help lead the men’s golf team to a 7th place finish among 14th teams at the ECAC Division III Championships at the par-70 Tunxis Plantation Golf Club. Read more.
KOTULSKI LIFTS MEN’S SOCCER PAST MCLA, 1-0
A late second-half goal by Dave Kotulski proved to be the difference as the men’s soccer team downed visiting MCLA, 1-0, in a non-conference contest on Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. Read more.
