Writing Support Services Faculty Information

What Faculty Should Know About Writing Support Services

We look forward to serving students from many schools, disciplines, and departments this semester. In order to serve your students best, please note these guidelines/considerations when making Writing Support Services referrals:

• Writing is a process that takes time. Help your students write their papers in stages rather than all at once at the last minute and consider making preliminary drafts due early. If you do not give them directions about this, many will wait until the last minute and we will not be able to help them to the best of our ability due to time constraints.
• It is possible to refer an entire class to Writing Support Services, but please work it out with the Director of the Academic Success Center in advance. We can accommodate many visits if they are distributed over a longer period of time.
• Give your students and us plenty of explanation about your assignments. Encourage them to bring copies of the assignments to Writing Support Services.
• Share your perceptions and views with us. If you see a student making progress, let us know. Conversely, if a tutoring session seemed counterproductive or lacking in some way, let us know so we can improve in the future.
• You can also refer students to writing tutors who you believe are best suited to your students’ needs. To assist students in making an informed choice, the WSS Tutor Profiles webpage states the documentation styles that each tutor is most familiar with.
• Remember that you will always be informed through Full Circle / campus e-mail of what went on in a writing tutorial session.
• Our goal in any tutorial session is to help students improve their writing, not to simply provide a proofreading service.
