Kathy Mangano
Head Softball Coach, Springfield College
One of the top coaches in New England, Kathy Mangano is now in her twentieth season coaching at her alma mater. The four-time New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, most recently in 2008, has won more games than any coach in the program’s history (458), and ranks among the national leaders in victories among active Division III coaches. Since the Pride moved to Division III in 1996, Springfield College has posted a 331-219-1 (.602) mark, with five teams advancing to the NCAA tournament. Mangano has guided her teams to three thirty-win campaigns since 2000 and a forty-one-win season in 2001. Springfield has made five post-season appearances in thirteen seasons, including berths in the NCAA tournament in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2008.
Mangano’s clubs have been impressive since joining the NEWMAC for the 1999 season. In conference play, Springfield College has posted 14-2 marks in NEWMAC regular-season games in 2000, 2001, and 2003. The Pride reached the championship game of the NEWMAC tournament from 2000 to 2003, and did so again in 2006. In 2007, Springfield College finished 12-4 in conference regular-season play and won its first-ever NEWMAC regular-season title. In 2008, Springfield won the NEWMAC post-season tournament and advanced to the NCAA regionals before finishing 29-17. In addition, the softball team has earned the College’s highly-coveted Pride Challenge Award three years in a row. As a student-athlete at Springfield College, Mangano was a four-year starter at first base and a team captain in her junior and senior seasons. She posted a career batting average of .349 in 136 games and, in 1985, she hit .407 and was selected to the Converse All-America and All-New England First Teams. Associate professor of physical education and skills coordinator at Springfield College, Mangano earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary physical education in 1986 and her master’s degree in teaching and administration in 1988, both from Springfield College. She earned a doctor of education degree in higher education from the University of Massachusetts in January 2007.
Julie Perrelli
Head Softball Coach, Smith College
Julie Perrelli is in her third year as head softball coach at Smith College. Under Perrelli's guidance, the Pioneers have compiled a 30-41 record while reaching post-season tournament play each year. In 2008, the Pioneers were recognized by the softball programs in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference when they received the coveted Sportsmanship Award. A 1999 graduate of Western Connecticut State University, Perrelli went on to receive a Master of Science degree in physical education/athletic administration in 2004 from Springfield College while serving as assistant softball coach for the Pride. Perrelli is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association and has worked as a softball clinician for thirteen years.
Michelle Caouette
Assistant Softball Coach/Pitching Coach, Springfield College
Michelle Caouette is a 2006 graduate of the University of Connecticut where she earned a degree in kinesiology with a focus in coaching and administration. Caouette was an outstanding pitcher for the Huskies. In her four years, she compiled three no-hitters, Big East player honorable mention honors, and was an academic all-star for two years. Caouette was also a co-captain her senior year. During her high school years, Caouette threw two perfect games, received All-American honors, and was selected as Pitcher of the Year for the state of New York. She has instructed and worked with pitchers at all levels, including elite Division I athletes and the Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist coach.
