Springfield College Tennis Camp

July 28 – August 1, 2008

For Boys and Girls Ages 6 – 17
Register early! Deadline for registration is July 7, 2008

Philosophy
This camp is a fun filled introduction to tennis. A games-based approach to teaching tennis fundamentals is employed. Ball machines and video cameras are also available to enhance skill learning. Learning to enjoy the game of tennis while improving fitness and increasing skill level will be emphasized daily. Boys and girls at all skill levels are encouraged to participate. Instruction will be personalized according to the student’s experience and skill level.

Schedule

9 a.m. Drop off at Physical Education Complex
9 - 9:15 a.m. Warm-up and Stretching
11 - 11:40 a.m. Tennis Skills
11:40 – Noon Tennis Games and Fitness Training

Facilities
  • 8 new tennis courts
  • Olympic-sized swimming pool for recreational swim

Director
Dr. Stephen Posner is a certified PTR tennis instructor. He has taught tennis to both physical education majors and the general student body for over twenty years at Springfield College and the State University of New York at Cortland. He has previously served as the teaching professional for the Hampden County Country Club and Holyoke Canoe Club. Coach Posner has also has worked as a teaching professional in Forest Park, Suffield Park, and Enfield Park. Posner, associate professor of sport management and men’s head gymnastics coach at Springfield College, came to Springfield in 1982 after coaching at S.U.N.Y Cortland for two years. He also served as an assistant coach at Syracuse University from 1977 to 1980. Posner earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cal-Berkley, his master’s degree in physical education from Syracuse University, and his Ph.D. in Sport, Exercise and Leisure Services from the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

Assistant Director
Toby Coffin graduated from SUNY Cortland with a BSE in Physical Education in 1990. Coach Coffin has been an Athletic Director, Physical Education Teacher, and Tennis Instructor for the past seventeen years. He previously worked as an Instructor of Tennis at The Big Vanilla Racquet Club in Severna Park, MD and Old South Country Club in Lothian, MD. Additionally, he coached the High School Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis team at the Calverton School in Huntingtown, MD for six years.

In 1999, Coach Coffin entered Springfield College where he graduated in 2001 with an MPE in Athletic Administration. While at Springfield College he worked as a graduate assistant with the Women’s Tennis team and coached three seasons as Boys’ Varsity tennis at Minnechaug Regional High School in Wilbraham, MA. For four years’ Coach Coffin worked as Athletic Director at the MacDuffie School in Springfield and was the Boys’ Varsity Tennis coach.

Currently, Mr. Coffin works as a PE and Health teacher at New Leadership Charter School and part time at Ludlow Tennis Club teaching youth and adult clinics. Coach Coffin is a member of the USTA and plays competitive tennis in the adult leagues and in USTA tournaments.
