Julia Chevan, presented two papers at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in Nashville

Julia Chevan, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy presented two papers this month at the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting in Nashville. The first paper was co-authored by Esther Haskvitz, PT, PhD of The Sage Colleges and was entitled,Do as I do: exercise habits of physical therapy professionals. The second was authored with Dr. Haskvitz and two of her Sage College graduates, Jaime Ascher and Lisa Macander and was entitled, A comparison of occupational prestige ratings of Physical Therapy by DPT and MSPT students.

Robert Welles, PT, MA, authored a poster presentation for the American Physical Therapy Association

Robert Welles, PT, MA, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy authored a poster presentation for the American Physical Therapy Association. The poster titled “Incorporating an Administrative Educational Experience into a Student Clinical Experience” was presented in Nashville on February 16, 2008 at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association.

J. Patrick Decoteau selected to speak at the 28th Annual IARP Conference

J. Patrick Decoteau, professor of rehabilitation and disability studies has been selected to speak at the 28th Annual IARP Conference and Life Care Planning Summit. The conference will be held in Los Angeles, CA on May 15-18. Decoteau will be co-presenting with Jon Veltri and Jesse Ogren. Their presentation is entitled Improving Practitioner Efficiency Through Information Literacy: Beyond the Basics to Application.

The great advantage of EMSM program at Springfield College

Alumni of the EMSM program at Springfield College have found a great advantage in the field with their combined experience in management and emergency medicine. A few of the programs successes include Craig Savageau, Class of ‘03, who is currently working with Booz Allen Hamilton, a government contractor and consulting firm in Maryland, where he works in emergency preparedness. Another alumnus of the program, Michael Wassell, Class of ‘07, is enjoying success with American Medical Response in Houston, TX. Wassell is working on the company’s new critical care transport truck, where he is the lead critical care paramedic. Karen Lynn LaRoche, Class of ‘07, is working in a managerial position at Clinquest. LaRoche works in drug safety surveillance for marketed and clinical trial drugs.

Rita Banks was honored by Massachusetts Department of Mental Health

Rita Banks, who completed the first medic program taught at Springfield College, was honored by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health at their Annual African American History Month Celebration on February 14th. Banks is the first African American female of record to be certified as an EMT by Massachusetts. She recently celebrated her 30th anniversary in EMS. The celebration was held in Boston and also honored was Melvin L. Reed, the first African American of record to be EMT certified in Massachusetts. John Auerbach, the DPH Commissioner, presented Banks and Reed with awards to honor their years of service in EMS. There was an exhibit honoring their careers in the Washington Street lobby of the Department of Mental Health building in Boston.

Dr. Graney recently appointed to the Board of Directors of Community Options, Inc.

Dr. Graney, professor for Rehabilitation and Disability Studies has recently been appointed (May, 2007) to the Board of Directors of Community Options, Inc. of Belchertown, MA. Community Options is a vocational support service for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, which employs 55 individuals daily in a variety of supported employment and school-to work programs in the Greater Belchertown-Amherst area. Local organizations such as local High Schools, Old Navy, Starbucks and Mass Mutual are positive supporters of these efforts. Community Options also operates its own retail business, Ransacka, which specializes in creative arts, gifts and copying services in Belchertown. Project PACE is another subsidiary of CO. Widely respected for their highly individualized and creative responses to the needs of individuals with disabilities, some who spent decades in Belchertown State School, Community Options is led by Ms. Betsy Grim. Community Options is funded by local schools and the Department of Mental Retardation.

Dr. Bernard J. Graney speaks at YMCA Child Care Symposium

Dr. Bernard J. Graney, professor for Rehabilitation and Disability Studies, CRC spoke at the Rhode Island-South East Massachusetts YMCA Child Care Symposium in Lincoln, RI on Saturday, January 26, 2008. More than 800 attended the event. Dr. Graney's topic: "Autism Spectrum Disorders and Basic Interventions for Child Care Providers" was delivered to two sessions, each 90 minutes. The presentation provided basic ideas on behavioral, social and language development skills to Early childhood educators, After` School staff and Recreational staff from YMCA's and child care providing agencies in the Region.

Jennifer Hixon and Charles Milch speak at 2008 Academic Chairpersons Conference

Jennifer Hixon, Chair of the Physician Assistant Department and Charles Milch, professor in the Physician Assistant Department, presented at the 2008 Academic Chairpersons Conference. Their presentation is entitled, “Evidence-Based Program Review and Curriculum Assessment Model.” The conference took place in Orlando, Florida on February 6th to the 8th, 2008. They presented with Jill Russell, PhD, VP for Strategic Planning and Karin Camihort, PhD, Educational Technologist at Springfield College.
