Elementary Education
Because they believe that all children can learn, it is no wonder that the supervising teachers give their highest praise to the graduates of our elementary teacher preparation program.
The program educates its students to respect all aspects of themselves and others in body, mind and spirit – providing them with the skills and confidence needed to reach every child. Our graduates successfully teach in settings ranging from inner city urban to suburban and rural schools. A recent graduate reports: “I did not realize how well prepared I was until I was out on my own.”
Classrooms to practice their student teaching are provided by our partner elementary schools. This opportunity offers excellent models providing our students with the skills to use “responsive” classroom, teaching across the curriculum, mainstreaming special needs children, and “understanding by design.” Our partner school teachers are recognized at the local, state, and national levels for their leadership and teaching excellence.
Preparation for becoming elementary teachers begins in year one. Each week our students work with elementary children from one of our partner schools. Working in pairs they prepare and lead lessons in science to a group of twelve children. The experience with elementary children continues each year through year four at which time they enter the next phase - student teaching.
Graduates of the Elementary Education Program are Prepared to:
- Plan Curriculum and Instruction.
- Deliver Effective Instruction.
- Manage Classroom Climate and Operation.
- Promote Equity.
- Meet Professional Responsibilities.
