Secondary Education
Because they believe that all students can learn, it is no wonder that the supervising teachers give their highest praise to the graduates of our secondary teacher preparation program.
The program educates its students to respect all aspects of themselves and others in body, mind and spirit – providing them with the skills and confidence needed to reach every student. Our graduates successfully teach in settings ranging from inner city urban to suburban and rural schools. A recent graduate reports: “I did not realize how well prepared I was until I was out on my own.”
Classrooms to practice their student teaching are provided by our partner secondary schools. This opportunity offers excellent models providing our students with the skills to use student centered pedagogy, teaching across the curriculum, mainstreaming special needs students, and “understanding by design.” Our partner school teachers are recognized at the local, state, and national levels for their leadership and teaching excellence.
Preparation for becoming secondary teachers begins in early in a student’s undergraduate career. As part of a course, Child Growth and Development, prospective teachers work with students from one of our partner schools each week. Working in pairs they prepare and lead lessons and coach students. The early experience with students continues each year through year four at which time they enter the next phase - student teaching. And, when students graduate to their first secondary teaching job, we will be there to support you through your first year and beyond.
Grads of our program are prepared to:
- (a) Plan Curriculum and Instruction.
- (b) Deliver Effective Instruction.
- (c) Manage Classroom Climate and Operation.
- (d) Promote Equity.
- (e) Meet Professional Responsibilities.
- (f) Assess Student learning
