Celebrating 125 Years of Great Ideas!

Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2010, Springfield College is internationally renowned for innovation that has improved people's lives. Stellar visionaries from the College have made indelible marks on society, culture, and health and wellness. Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball. William Morgan invented the game of volleyball. Dr. Luther Gulick earned renown as the father of physical education and recreation in the United States, and Dr. Peter Karpovich was recognized worldwide for his research in exercise physiology. Individuals associated with Springfield College have been founders and early leaders of such organizations as the American College of Sports Medicine, Camp Fire Girls of America, National Parks and Recreation Association, Jacob's Pillow, and more.

Springfield College continues to transform lives and communities in many ways: advancing sports for girls and women, conducting research on health and wellness topics, and preparing professionals involved in organizing, coaching, and participating in the Olympics. In more than sixty countries around the world, our alumni provide inspiration and leadership in the fields of health, sport and movement studies, human and social services, education, business, and the arts and sciences.

Illuminated Canoe Parade

A century ago, during the 1909 commencement week, a group of seniors decorated five canoes in preparation for what we believe to be the first water parade. This initiated a tradition that continued for several decades, with each year’s parade becoming bigger and better than the year before. As part of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Springfield College, the 2009 illumination canoe parade will take place on Friday, November 6, at 7 p.m., in conjunction with the annual Pep Rally on Rally Hill during Homecoming Weekend.
