Physician Assistant Program Graduation Celebration held for the Class of 2009
The Physician Assistant Program held their Graduation Celebration for the Class of 2009 on May 15 to recognize the twenty-four students who have completed the Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant studies. Professor Charles Milch, Program Director, served as the Master of Ceremony and Dean William Susman offered welcoming remarks. Dr. Mark Kenton, Medical Director of the program, was the keynote speaker for the event and Mary Ann Coughlin, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, called up each graduate for recognition.A service of Thanks and Farewell was held in recognition of donors for the Anatomy Lab
A service of Thanks and Farewell was held on May 5 in recognition of donors for the Anatomy Lab. Dr. Kathleen Pappas, Assistant Professor from the Physical Therapy Department, along with several Anatomy students, expressed their appreciation. The service was organized and led by Dr. Pappas with Dr. David McMahon, Director of the United Campus Ministry and Spiritual Life Center.Rehabilitation and Disability Studies Department holds Recognition Breakfast
The Rehabilitation and Disability Studies Department held the annual Recognition Breakfast on April 24, 2009. This event recognizes the academic excellence, dedication, and personal commitment of outstanding students. Among the recipients were James Brunault, the John J. Szufnarowski Graduate Student Award; Lauren McAulay, the Raymond A. Berte Outstanding Achievement Award; Amanda Berg, the Patricia Perenick Memorial Award; Sara Kingston and Chelsea Ruscio Samble, the Benjamin R. Ricci Scholarship Award; Eric Zorko, the Advocacy Networks Award. Caitlin McInerny, the Thomas J. Ruscio, Jr. Rehabilitation Leadership Award; Jessica Greer, the Humanics Award; Jaclyn Connors, Lauren Fahey, and Karah Heald, the Scholars in Action; and Julie Bates and Rebecca Cohen, the Alumni Recognition.J. Patrick Decoteau elected as secretary-treasurer of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP)
J. Patrick Decoteau, professor of rehabilitation & disability studies, has been elected as secretary-treasurer of the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP). In that position, he joins the Executive Committee as well as membership on the IARP Board of Directors for 2009-2011. Currently, Dr. Decoteau serves IARP on its Finance Committee as a representative for the Case Management Section Board of Directors, for which he is a founding member. IARP serves a diverse membership practicing in the fields of long-term disability and disability management consulting, case management and managed care, forensics and expert testimony, life care planning, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) consulting.Physical Therapy Department holds 22nd Annual Recognition Day
The Physical Therapy Department held their 22nd Annual Recognition Day on April 17. Virginia Walls, PT, MS, NCS, ATP, '98 was selected to received The Gertrude M. Lamb Award, an award established to recognize the outstanding contributions made to the profession of physical therapy. Sylvie Le received The Margaret E. Kleinfeld Physical Therapy Award, which recognizes a PT student who demonstrates a love for Springfield College and its mission, and was nominated for the Minority Scholarship Award given by the Physical Therapy Fund. Allison King was nominated for the Ruth P. Hall Clinical Fellowship Award which recognizes a physical therapy student who demonstrates the professional qualities of dedication and caring. Allison was also honored with the Physical Therapy Student Recognition Award in recognition of a commitment to Springfield College's Humanics Philosophy through service and leadership. The Mary McMillan Scholarship Award Nominee was Sharon Trembley for exhibiting superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contribution. The Jean Crothers Welles Scholarship Fund Award is awarded to a SC student who is in good standing in the SC Physical Therapy program and has demonstrated service to their community and was awarded to Kristen Albin. The ceremony culminated with the recitation of the Pledge For Physical Therapy by the 2009 graduating class.Springfield College’s Physical Therapy (PT) Program presented the Green Memorial Lecture in Physical Therapy in honor of Jean V. Greene on March 12, 2009.
This annual event featured Donald A. Neumann, P.T., Ph.D. as the guest speaker. He discussed The Power of Education: Looking back over the last 35 years. Dr. Neumann is a professor of physical therapy at Marquette University. He is the author of “Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Physical Rehabilitation” (2002) and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Neumann has received three Fulbright Scholarships to teach kinesiology in Lithuania and Hungary. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education, in Kaunas, Lithuania in 2007.Click here for the Spring '09 archives
