Health/Family and Consumer Sciences, (All)Students interested in seeking licensure as a teacher of health/family and consumer sciences select the health studies major and complete the teacher preparation program, while those seeking employment outside the school environment complete the health studies major and a department approved minor.
Students enrolled in the health/family and consumer sciences program are prepared to teach all levels (PreK-12). All Health Studies majors enroll in Methods and Materials in Health/Family and Consumer Sciences, Health Topics for the Professional, Organization, Administration, and Assessment of School Health Programs, and Curriculum, Methods, and Organization in preparation toward meeting the professional standards required for licensure in Massachusetts.
Instructors of these courses design assignments that address the needs of students at both the elementary and secondary levels of schooling. Preservice teachers are required to design unit and lesson plans, projects, and other assignments at both the elementary and secondary levels since the license they are seeking covers ALL levels.
