Special Achievements:
In 2006, the Organization of American Historians and the National Parks Service invited him to join a team of scholars reviewing the John F. Kennedy birthplace in Brookline, Mass. His writing on religion and politics will appear in several forthcoming edited books, such as Religion and the Presidency (Columbia University Press, 2008), Catholics and American Politics (Georgetown University Press, 2008), and Religion and the American Presidency (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007).
He currently serves as book review editor for the New England Historical Association, and has contributed reviews for the Journal of American History and the Catholic Historical Review. His commentary on religion and politics, as well as the history of sport, has appeared in various media. Local Springfield television stations interviewed him following September 11 and other major news events, and C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2 broadcast and rebroadcast his presentation, “Catholic Hero or Secular Icon? Religion in the Presidency of John F. Kennedy.” Professor Carty has also written on the growing popularity of soccer in the U.S. for the Hartford Courant.
