Purpose of the Program

The Premedical Scholars Program is designed to provide admission opportunities to outstanding students of Springfield College who have as their goal to become Doctors of Medicine. The program is conducted under joint collaboration with Springfield College and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Under this program, Springfield College students apply to the Medical College of Wisconsin at the end of their sophomore year. A maximum of two (2) students will be awarded reserved admissions to the Medical College of Wisconsin at the beginning of the junior year at Springfield College. Students complete their junior and senior year earning a BA/BS degree prior to matriculating to the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The advantage for those students accepted at the end of their sophomore year is to have a guaranteed seat in the Medical College of Wisconsin entering class upon graduation from Springfield College. The student can spend the last two years at Springfield College meeting graduation and major/minor requirements, taking electives, fulfilling internship and/or service opportunities, and otherwise broadening their life experiences. Preliminary acceptance or acceptance is contingent on the completion of the courses listed below under “Program Requirements,” the general education requirements set forth by Springfield College, and completion of Chemistry 222/224 and Physics 210 by the end of the junior year and Physics 211 prior to graduation. The Medical College of Wisconsin reserves the right to, at anytime, reject a student deemed unsuitable for the program.

Program Requirements

Springfield College students may enroll in any major, provided the Medical College of Wisconsin entry requirements are met by the designated year of enrollment. Springfield College students will apply for admissions to this program after completing three semesters (approximately 45 credit hours). Applications will be available in February of the sophomore year and will be due by March 15. Eligibility criteria for this program include:

* Grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.50 overall and 3.60 or better in the sciences

* Completion of the following courses:

During the Freshman Year:

Bioscience 121/123 and 122/124
Chemistry 121/123 and 122/124
English 113 and 114
Math 1401

During the Sophomore Year:

Chemistry 221/223
Genetics 280/281
Math 1421
Upper level Biology/Chemistry requirements per advisor
(Strongly recommended: Math 215)
1Math 140 and 142 may be taken at any time prior to the winter semester of the Sophomore Year.

The Springfield College PreProfessional Advisor will distribute the Medical College of Wisconsin applications to the qualifying students.

Application Criteria

* Submit application to the Springfield College PreProfessional Advisor by specified date

* Forward letters of evaluation from the Springfield College PreProfessional Advisor and/or a Springfield College science faculty member.

* The Springfield College PrePofessional Committee will review applications, conduct interviews of qualified students, and prepare a list of nominees with evaluations to be forwarded to the Medical College of Wisconsin

* Applicants are to take the MCAT by August prior to the start of the senior year and score no less than an eight in each of the numeric sections, and an M on the Writing Sample portion of the Test.

* Applicants are to file and complete an Early Decision AMCAS Application between June 1 and August 1 after their junior year

* Applicants are to read and sign the Technical Standards Signature Form

* Applicants are to submit a Clean Credit Report by the date determined by the Medical College of Wisconsin

* All deadlines will be enforced

Selection Criteria
(Selection Committee will rank top students using this criteria)

1. Meeting all academic and course requirements.

2. Commitment to Medicine.

3. Community service/leadership positions held.

4. Successful interview with the Medical College of Wisconsin selection committee.

Program Participants

The Medical College of Wisconsin will accept a maximum of two (two students per year into the Premedical Scholars Program. Participants are expected to:

* Maintain a graduate with a 3.60 or better science GPA and a 3.50 overall

* Continue to gain clinical experience/exposure

* Continue community service/leadership opportunities

* Complete the following courses by the end of junior year
(sixth semester or summer prior to senior year)

Chemistry 222/224
Physics 210
Strongly recommend: Chemistry 331 and Biology 420/421

* Take the MCAT by August prior to start of senior year (MCAT scores are for the Medical College of Wisconsin records only and will not affect acceptance once received). Students are encouraged to perform to their maximum capabilities on the MCAT.

All prescribed courses in the baccalaureate program of the applicant’s choice must be taken at Springfield College. Any deviation from the required courses listed above requires written approval from the PreProfessional Advisor and from the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Office of Admissions. The applicant must complete the requirements for the major and graduate from Springfield College within four years before entering the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The acceptance to the Medical College of Wisconsin will be withdrawn if application is made to another medical school, or if academic, ethical, or moral violations occur, or if a personal change in career choice is made:
