Art Exhibition: Thread/Texture/Time by: Milisa Galizzi
“In my paintings, I explored the fine line between traditional craft -- mending, fixing, sewing -- and fine art, while simultaneously making a conceptual commentary about human relationships. In these pieces, bits of old lace, thread, or rope are pressed into a bed of warm encaustic wax and delicately pulled out leaving a powerful impression symbolic of the detritus of generations of women's domestic chores long ignored as valuable work. To emphasize the texture of the missing lace, oil stick is rubbed into the ‘valleys’ and more encaustic wax is gingerly brushed onto the ‘hills’ creating a build-up of wax-like snow falling on tree limbs in winter. Delicate lines are then drawn into the wax and filled with oil stick for emphasis. These lines act as a visual metaphor which harkens back to the silk threads used to create the original lace as well as conceptually speak to the power of human interconnections.” Milisa Galizzi

Theatre: Dead Man's Cell Phone...By: Sarah Ruhl, Directed by Martin Shell, associate professor at Springfield College
An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café, a stranger who has had enough, and a dead man - with a lot of loose ends - begins this wildly imaginative new comedy. It is an odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. Playwright Sarah Ruhl has won a MacArthur Genius Grant and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for The Clean House.

Poetry Reading: From "Losing Season," by Jack Ridl
According to poet Conrad Hilberry, Ridl's sports poems are "unmatched anywhere in American poetry…They are so compelling, so varied, so familiar to anyone who knows high school and sports that they may well introduce a new genre.” Ridl, the award-winning author of poetry and chapbooks, will read from his newest collection (September 2009), which chronicles a year of hope and defeat on and off the basketball court in a small town. The son of beloved University of Pittsburgh Basketball Coach Buzz Ridl, the author has been named one of the 100 most influential sports educators in America by the Institute for International Sport. Garrison Keillor twice featured poems from "Losing Season" in The Writer's Almanac. Book signing and refreshments follow the reading.
