 Head Coach John Gibson
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his eighth season as head women's soccer coach and associate professor of physical education at Springfield College.
Gibson’s most successful campaign at Springfield College came in 2005. SC tied the school record for wins, compiling a 14-5-3 record, including a school record-tying streak where the Pride won 10 consecutive matches, while also remaining unbeaten in 12 straight contests. In 2006, the Pride had a 14-6 record and advanced to the championship game of the ECAC tournament.
Gibson, the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year in 2005, guided SC to its first-ever NEWMAC Tournament Championship, as the Pride earned its first NCAA Division III Tournament berth in school history. SC downed Castleton State, 3-0, at home in the first round to earn its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament win in school history before falling at Oneonta State in second-round action of the NCAA’s. In seven years at Springfield, Gibson has won conference Coach of the Year honors twice.
For SC’s outstanding 2005 campaign, Gibson was also honored as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III New England Regional Coach of the Year.
Gibson has led the Pride to numerous post-season bids and three trips to the conference championship match, as well as the program’s first Division III national ranking. His clubs have registered an impressive a 78-49-11 record.
Before coming to SC, Gibson spent six years as a tenured senior lecturer in the department of physical education and sport science at the University College of St. Mark and St. John in Plymouth, England. He also has taught at Marshall University, the University of Dayton, and The Ohio State University.
Gibson was the men's soccer coach at Marshall University for five seasons (1989-93) and was the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 1990.
Gibson is a 1977 graduate of St. Luke's College in Exeter, Devon, England where he earned his degree in physical education. He received his master’s degree in physical education at Marshall in 1985 and Ph.D. in philosophy of sport at Ohio State in 1989.
Gibson is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and the recipient of the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma in 1986.
