SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 4, 2006 – Charlie Brock, head men’s basketball coach at Springfield College, has been named to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He was named to this most coveted of positions during the recent NABC Convention at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Founded in 1927, the NABC is the largest professional association of basketball coaches, currently consisting of approximately 5000 members through the ranks of NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA, junior and community colleges, and high schools. The NABC Board of Directors is a governing group of coaches comprised of 7 officers and 14 other directors. Its purpose is to further the best interests of the game of basketball, as well as the players and coaches who participate in the sport. The outgoing President of the organization is Jim Burson, head coach of Muskingum College of New Concord, Ohio.
Brock becomes the third coach from Springfield College to serve on the NABC Board of Directors. The others were Edward Hickox (1944-46) and John Bunn (1949-50), both members of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
“I can’t tell you how proud and humbled I am by this opportunity,” said Brock, a 1976 graduate of SC, “and I can’t tell you how pleased I am to be able to represent Springfield College, as well as NCAA Division III. This appointment allows me an opportunity to give back to the game, and provides me a chance to continue to find ways to make a contribution to the sport on a national basis. I’m also most impressed with the make-up of the Board, past and present. Many of the past presidents include so many legendary names within the profession. As I said, I’m just so humbled to be selected.”
Brock has just completed his 8th season at Springfield College. Overall, he just completed his 26th season as a head coach. He spent six years at Drew University in Madison, N.J. (1980-81 through 1985-86), three years at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. (1986-87 through 1988-89), and nine years at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas (1989-90 through 1997-98), before arriving at Springfield. Charlie’s overall record is now 357-321 (.527). His record at Springfield alone is 128-92 (.582).
Brock has just completed a term of 22 years as a member of the NABC Academics Committee. He will continue his role, however, as a member of the NCAA Rules Committee through September, 2007.
