Women's Gymnastics Easily Handles MIT in Season Opener
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – January 10, 2007 – MIT’s Julia Zimmerman captured the all-around, but it was the Springfield College women’s gymnastics team that defeated their counterparts from MIT, 181.550 to 172.525, tonight in a meet that took place at Springfield’s Blake Arena.
It was the opening meet of the season for both teams. Thus, Springfield becomes 1-0, while MIT falls to 0-1.
The Springfield women captured all four events – including vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, and floor exercise -- en route to the team victory. In the vault, SC won by a score of 46.300 to MIT’s 44.075. In the bars, it was SC 45.000 to 41.000. In the floor exercise, it was SC 45.425 to 43.100. And in the balance beam, in the closest score, it was SC 44.825 to 44.350.
Winning the vault was Springfield’s Jillian Silverman, a senior from Ipswich, Mass., with a score of 9.425. She also placed third in the uneven parallel bars (8.900), and fifth in the balance beam (8.975).
Winning the uneven parallel bars was the Pride’s Kristin Fairburn, a sophomore from Salem, N.H., with a score of 9.375. Fairburn also finished second in the balance beam (9.050), and in a tie for sixth in the floor exercise (8.750).
Winning the floor exercise was MIT sophomore Julia Zimmerman (Chicago, Ill.) with a score of 9.550. Zimmerman also took the all-around with a score of 36.725. She tied for third in the vault (9.325), and was second in bars (9.300).
And winning the balance beam was MIT freshman Gillian Conahan (Portland, Ore.), with a score of 9.150.
