SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- September 15, 2007 -- Kayla Thibeault’s (Lebanon, Conn.)goal at the 76:03 mark proved to be all the scoring the Springfield College women’s soccer team would need as the Pride defeated RPI, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. The Pride improves to 5-1, while the Red Hawks fall to 3-2-1.
After Delany Cantrall (Santa Paula, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the box, Thibeault collected the bouncing ball that the Red Hawks were unable to clear. Thibeault’s shot found the back of the net with just under 15 minutes left in regulation to provide the only scoring in the match.
The Pride dominated throughout the match, holding the Red Hawks to just one shot. Springfield, which took 14 shots in the game, held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) did not need to make a save as she picked up her third shutout of the season.
Springfield returns to action on Tuesday evening, when it travels to take on local-rival Amherst at 7:00 p.m.
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his 10th season as head women's soccer at Springfield College in the fall of 2009. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 110-56-14 record.
