SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- April 7, 2008 – The Springfield College baseball team scored 16 runs on 17 hits and used a complete team effort to down MCLA 16-3 at Berry-Allen field this afternoon in non-conference play.
The win improves the Pride’s record to 8-13 overall, while the Trailblazers drop to 6-9.
Senior Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) led the way for the Pride as he was just a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle. Cone batted in four runs and scored two runs himself as he was 5-for-6 at the plate. Sophomore catcher Rob Malaspina (Woodbury, Conn.) also contributed with four hits, which included two doubles and two RBI.
The Pride broke open a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as it scored another three runs to lead 6-2. After consecutive singles by Cone and senior Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.), MCLA pitcher Sean Kelly threw consecutive walks to junior Ryan Tatreau (Greenfield, Mass.) and senior Tim Romeo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) to plate Cone for the first run of the inning. Malaspina then plated Hingston and Tatreau on a fielding error by the pitcher. Springfield tacked on ten more runs throughout the final six innings to win by a final of 16-3.
The 16 runs by the Pride is its most since opening day when it posted 24 runs against Albertus Magnus in Phoenix in March.
The winning pitcher for Springfield College was sophomore Ryan White (Colchester, Conn.). White pitched a strong seven innings for the Pride, allowing just six hits and two earned runs, while striking out six Trailblazers. With the win, White improves his win-loss record to 2-2.
Springfield has four more games this week. The Pride travels to Coast Guard tomorrow as it continues play in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). The Pride is 2-3 in conference games heading into the contest.
