WALTHAM, Mass., November 18, 2006 - Springfield College senior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) scored a team-high 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor to go along with six rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament Team, but it was the Pride which fell to the host Judges in the championship game of the Brandeis University Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon at the Red Auerbach Arena.
SC (1-1) started the first two minutes and 23 seconds of this championship contest on a 7-0 run, as the first 20 minutes of action between the Pride and Judges was back-and-forth. Brandeis took a 19-14 lead with 11:37 left in the opening half, as SC then built another seven-point lead (29-22) with 4:43 left until intermission. The Pride went into the locker room with a one-point edge, at 33-32, as SC connected on 46.9 percent of its first-half field goals (15-32).
The second half was a much different story, however, as the Judges made seven of their eight three-point field goal attempts (87.5%) and 18 of their 29 overall field goal attempts (62.1%). With 12:44 remaining in regulation and a two-point Pride lead (42-40), Brandeis went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game as the Judges never looked back, rolling to the Tip-Off title.
SC junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) joined Farley on the All-Tournament Team, scoring 10 points and adding four assists, four steals, and two boards. Sophomore center Zach Mitzan (Wilmington, Mass.) also scored 10 points, and contributed with eight rebounds and a game-best two blocks.
Brandeis (2-0) was led by junior guard Kwame Graves-Fulgham (Amherst, Mass.) with a game-high 11 assists to add to his eight points, four rebounds, and three steals. Graves-Fulgham was honored as the weekend's Most Valuable Player. Classmate Florian Rexhepi (Skopje, Macedonia) joined Graves-Fulgham on the All-Tournament Team with a game-best 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep.
The Pride will next play Curry College on Tuesday evening, November 21st, at 7:30 p.m. in SC's home opener.
