WELLESLEY, Mass. – On a day that featured three conference records, four
NCAA B-cut standards, one NCAA A-cut performance, and two lead changes,
Springfield College holds a slim lead over MIT at the New England
Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Swimming and
Diving Championships. The Pride totals 470.5 points after 13 events, while
MIT trails with 460. Wheaton College is a close third with 442.
Springfield College is attempting to win its eighth straight title in this competition.
Wheaton College began the evening with a win in the 200-medley relay.
Abby Pratt (Melrose, Mass.), Emily Sweatt (Portland, Maine), Dania
Piscetta (Belmont, N.H.), and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, Mass.) teamed up for a
time of 1:49.64, shaving .01 seconds off the conference record set last
year by Wheaton.
MIT’s Nicole O’Keefe (Los Angeles, Calif.) captured the 400 IM in
4:38.15, meeting the B-cut standard for Nationals. The Engineers captured
the next race as well, as Amy Jacobi (Cranbury, N.J.) was first to the
wall in the 100 fly. Jacobi’s time of 57.67 was a new conference record,
met the B-cut standard for nationals, and is one of the ten fastest D-III
times of the year.
Coast Guard’s Kimberly Shadwick (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) took the title in the
200 free with a B-cut time of 1:54.93. Runner-up Sasha Brophy (Cupertino,
Calif.) of MIT also met the B standard, clocking a 1:55.19 in the final.
Springfield junior Moira Price (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) repeated as
conference champ in the 100 breaststroke. Her blistering 1:04.59 broke her
own conference record by .49 seconds and met the A-cut standard for
nationals. Runner-up Megan Lynch (Holden, Mass.) of Babson reached the
B-cut with a 1:07.28.
In the 100 backstroke final, a mere .61 seconds separated first from
fourth, with Springfield’s Kallie Pottle (Brewer, Maine) edging out the
field with a 1:00.39. The Pride also captured the final event of the
evening, as Aimee Doe (Haverhill, Mass.), Emily Sheahan (Erin, N.Y.),
Pottle and Price teamed up for a 7:49.25, edging MIT by .28 seconds.
Springfield’s time meets the B-cut standard and places the foursome in
the D-III top-ten in the event.
Sunday’s competition begins at 11:00 a.m., with the prelims of the
200-back, 100-free, 200-breast, 200-fly, 400-free relay and 1650-free.
The finals of the 3-meter diving event, which Springfield is expected to dominate, will begin at 1:30 p.m., while finals for the day’s events will begin at 6:30 pm.
