Women's Lacrosse Sews Up Second Seed In NEWMAC
BABSON PARK, Mass., April 17, 2004 -- Visiting Springfield College jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the first half and then withstood a late Babson College comeback as the Pride defeated the Beavers, 14-7, in the final regular season New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the year on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Pride (7-4, 5-1 NEWMAC) enters next week’s conference tournament as the second seed, while Babson (9-4, 4-2 NEWMAC) will be seeded third.
The Pride dominated play early on, putting relentless pressure on Babson goalies Margaret Schlachter and Jennie Williams. Sophomore Holly Carmody (Wayland, Mass.) would score the first of three unanswered goals to start the game for SC before Babson finally got on the board with 23:58 left in the half. The Pride would then rattle off six of the game’s next seven scores, including three more goals by Carmody, to build a commanding 9-2 lead.
Facing its largest deficit of the contest, Babson clawed its way back into the game by scoring the final three goals of the first half to cut the lead to four, 9-5, at the half.
The Pride’s defense clamped down in the second half, allowing just a pair of Beaver goals. SC senior Libby Beinert (Williston, Vt.) scored three goals and Carmody added her fifth to lead the Pride to the eventual 14-7 victory.
Sophomore Kendra Silpatric (Plymouth, N.H.) finished with six saves in net for SC.
