

WALTHAM, Mass., November 17, 2006 - Springfield College junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with five rebounds and three steals as the Pride opened up its 2006-07 season with a 77-53 victory over Colby-Sawyer College this evening in the first round of the Brandeis University Tip-Off Tournament.
SC (1-0) advances to face host Brandeis University tomorrow afternoon, November 18th, in the championship game of the Judges' Tip-Off Tournament at Red Auerbach Arena at 3:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer (0-1) will meet Newbury College on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. In the first game of tonight's doubleheader, Brandeis knocked off Newbury by a score of 73-60.
The Pride came out hot in its season opener, taking a 17-2 lead with 11:28 left in the first half. After the first 20 minutes of play, SC led by 22 points (39-17), holding Colby-Sawyer to just 15 percent shooting (5-32) for the frame. The Pride connected on 11 of its 25 first-half field goals, shooting 44 percent. Gibbs and senior guard Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) led SC at halftime with 12 points apiece.
The Pride kept it going in the second stanza, outscoring Colby-Sawyer by a 38-36 margin for the 77-53 final. Pizzo finished with 14 points, a game-high seven assists, and six rebounds in the victory. Senior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) chipped in with eight points and four boards, as freshman forward Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) totaled six points and seven rebounds in his first career collegiate action.
Charlie Brock in 2009-10 will enter his 12th season as the head coach at Springfield College. Brock’s achievements as a coach are certainly impressive, as he has taken three schools to the NCAA Division III Tournament and has an overall, 29-year record of 394-363 for a winning percentage of .520.
