MIT Defeats Men's Tennis in NEWMAC Opener, 7-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 6, 2006 – Mike Castonia outlasted Bobby Schlink at #6 singles in leading the MIT men’s tennis team to a 7-0 victory over Springfield College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match this afternoon at SC’s Appleton Courts.

With the win, MIT is now 6-1, while Springfield falls to 2-4.

Schlink, a freshman from Quaker Hill, Conn., won the first set 6-1, but then found himself trailing 5-1 in the second set to Castonia. Schlink then came back to lead 6-5 and was serving for the match. But Castonia found some inner strength to force a tiebreaker, winning that tiebreaker, 7-3. Castonia then won a super tiebreaker, 10-5, allowing MIT to produce the shutout.

MIT took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles. Senior Evan Tindell (Boca Raton, Fla.) and sophomore Eric Beren (Dallas, Texas) won at number one doubles, 8-5, over SC freshman Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) and senior Justin Freitas (E. Providence, R.I.). T he most competitive doubles match occurred at No. 3 where SC’s Schlink and sophomore Guy Lepore (Bay Shore, N.Y.) lost 8-6 to MIT freshman Peden Nichols (Great Falls, Va.) and sophomore Mike Price (Gaithersburg, Md.).

MIT later captured all six singles, led by Tindell at No. 1 and Beren at No. 3. Others who won in straight sets included junior Thomas Dohlman (Wellesley, Mass.) at No. 2, junior Mark Egan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) at No. 4, and Nichols at No. 5.

The match began with doubles play.
