SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 13, 2006 – Jared Ashe scored the winning goal in double overtime to lead the Wesleyan University men’s soccer team to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Springfield College tonight at SC’s Brock-Affleck Field.

With the victory, the Cardinals are now 1-0, while the Pride falls to 1-3-2.

Springfield had taken a 1-0 lead at 18:32 into the first half when freshman back Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal for the Pride.

Wesleyan came back to tie at 38:34 when sophomore forward Matt Nevin tallied a goal assisted by senior midfielder Morgan Owen. That tied it at 1-1 at the half, and that’s the way the score remained throughout the second half and the first 10-minute overtime.

At 7:36 into the second overtime, with just 2:24 remaining before the match would have been declared a tie, Ashe, a senior back from Stamford, Conn., pushed one across from directly in front of the goal to win it for Wesleyan. The goal was unassisted.

Wesleyan had the better of the statistics, although Springfield certainly had its opportunities. The Cardinals outshot the Pride, 17-7, including 7-1 in the overtime sessions. Wesleyan also had 16 corner kicks to SC’s 5.

In goal, Wesleyan junior Matt Gnall made three saves. For Springfield, junior Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, Del.) had five saves.

SC will continue to play a tough stretch of opponents when it takes on Babson College in Babson Park, Mass., this Saturday, September 16th at 2:00 p.m. The match will be the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest of 2006 for the Pride.
