Softball Splits Again Thursday in Florida: Defeats Suffolk, 5-1
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- March 21, 2008 -- The Springfield College softball team split a pair of games Thursday in Kissimee, Florida. In game #1, the Pride lost 3-2 in 9 innings to Framingham State. Then in game #2, the Pride defeated Suffolk, 5-1.As a result, Springfield is now 3-5 on its Florida swing, with two games left on Friday against William Paterson and St. Benedict.
The first game Thursday against Framingham State was scoreless after the regulation seven innings. Each team scored a run in the eighth. But Framingham State scored two runs in the top of the ninth, while SC could only muster one run in return in the bottom of the ninth. Senior second baseman Denise Fumicello (Brockton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Sophomore OF Bryn Worrilow (No. Babylon, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a double, and sophomore catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior lefthander Samantha Rhodes (Mendon, Mass.) pitched a 9-inning complete game, allowing just one earned run on just three hits. She struck out seven, while walking two and hitting a batter. As a team, Springfield had seven hits.
In game #2, Springfield took control in the top of the first with two runs. Suffolk cut it to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. But the Pride scored once in the sixth, and added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman righthander Sarah Pongratz (Winchester, Mass.) pitched a complete-game victory, the first of her collegiate career. She gave up five hits and no earned runs, while striking out five and walking none. Junior DP Aimee Cassella (Southington, Conn.) knocked in a total of three runs by going 1-for-2, including a double. Worrilow went 2-for-4 with an RBI. And junior OF Angie Atkins (East Haddam, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. As a team, Springfield had nine hits.

Head Coach Julie Perrelli
Julie Perrelli was been named an Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Head Softball Coach at Springfield College in June of 2009. The head softball coach at Smith for the past three years, Perrelli received both her doctorate (this past May) and her masters in 2004 from Springfield College, where she served as a graduate assistant for the Pride from the 2003 through 2006 seasons.
