SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 1, 2005 – Springfield College junior midfielder Cara Reilly (Lexondale, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.) each scored twice as the Pride defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 7-1, in both squad’s 2005 season opener.

Tonight’s game marked the first official women’s varsity collegiate contest to take place on the brand new 200,000 square foot multi-purpose sports complex, and the first contest to be held under the lights at SC this season.

The Pride (1-0) took an early one goal lead on a penalty kick by Bugbee in the 17th minute of action. Five minutes later, SC took a two-goal advantage on Reilly’s first goal of the contest. Pride junior midfielder Jessica Denehy (Whately, Mass.) tallied a goal in the 31st minute as SC took a 3-0 lead into the half.

In the second stanza, the Pride were too much for the Red Hawks (0-1) as SC’s defense held RPI to just one goal while adding four of their own for a final score of 7-1. Springfield College second half goals were scored by Bugbee, Reilly, senior forward Amanda Nealon (Falmouth, Mass.), and junior midfielder Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.).

Pride goalkeeper Amanda Petri (E. Granby, Conn.) surrendered just one goal, while RPI goalkeeper Jackie Gabriele recorded 2 saves.

SC plays host to Western New England College on Tuesday, September 6th at 7:00 pm.
