Baseball, Softball, Men's Tennis, Women's Lacrosse All Seeded High in NEWMAC Post-Season Play
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- April 22, 2008 -- Four Springfield College spring varsity sports have been seeded highly in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference post-season play, scheduled to begin this week. The following is a quick summary of the very latest involving those four teams. Details involving three other spring sports are also included.In baseball, Springfield (14-18, 5-7 NEWMAC) has been seeded fourth in the six-team field in this double elimination format. The Pride will play at MIT Wednesday at 3:30 pm. Win or lose, Springfield will also play a game Thursday at 3:30 pm. The place and the opponent will be determined by what happens on Wednesday. Babson has been seeded #1.
In softball, Springfield (24-14, 11-5 NEWMAC) has been seeded third in the six-team field in this double elimination format. The format is slightly different, however, than it is for baseball, as the top two seeds receive first-round byes.The Pride will open against #6-seeded Smith Wednesday at 2:30 pm at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. If Springfield wins, it will play #2-seeded Wheaton at 5 pm, immediately following its game versus Smith. If Springfield loses its game versus Smith, it would proceed to Saturday's games and play in the losers bracket. Wellesley has been seeded #1.
In men's tennis, when Springfield (7-5, 4-1 NEWMAC) defeated Babson last Saturday, 5-4, it earned a first-round bye in the NEWMAC tourney and a #2 seed. The Pride moved directly into a semifinal match, which will be played at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. this Saturday (April 26) at 10:30 am. Springfield will play the winner of #3 Babson vs. #6 Clark, which will be played Thursday at Babson. MIT is the #1 seed. The semifinals and final will be played all on the same day.
In women's lacrosse, there is still more regular season activity to go. Springfield (8-6, 4-1 NEWMAC) will host Smith at Stagg Field this Saturday (April 26) at 1:00 pm. But Springfield is already locked into the #2 seed in the tourney. More details later as they become more clear.
In other Springfield varsity sports, the men's and women's varsity outdoor track & field teams will be competing in the NEWMAC's this Saturday (April 26) at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
And finally, in men's lacrosse, Springfield (7-5, 5-0 Pilgrim) is moving right along in Pilgrim League play. When it defeated Babson, 11-5, last Saturday at Babson, the Pride took control of its own destiny as far as post-season play is concerned. Springfield was scheduled play league-foe Norwich (currently 0-5 in league play) Wednesday at home at 7 pm in a regular-season match. But that match has been cancelled by Norwich, and will not be made up.Up next for SC, it will play arch-rival and cross-town rival WNEC on Friday at home at 5:00 pm in a non-conference battle. Finally, Springfield will play at MIT Saturday (April 26) at 1:00 pm in a league game to end its regular season.
