Men's Basketball Drops 48-39 Decision To Connecticut College
Box ScoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass. — December 11, 2007 --Despite an 11-point, 12-rebound performance from junior John Strawson (Torrington, Conn.), the Springfield College men’s basketball team fell to visiting Connecticut College, 48-39, on Tuesday evening at Blake Arena.
With the loss the Pride drops to 2-5 this season, while the Camels improve to 7-1.
Springfield raced out to an early 7-4 lead after Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.) buried a three just over two minutes into the game. The teams would trade baskets over the next several minutes before the Pride built a five-point advantage, 18-13, after a layup by Strawson with 10:54 remaining. Both teams would go stone cold for the next 4:51 as neither team would score a basket. In the stretch, the Pride missed 10 shots while the Camels went 0-4.
Dean Lampe’s trifecta finally broke the cold spell, cutting the Pride’s lead to two, 18-16, with 6:03 left in the first half. Back-to-back fast break layups from Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) gave the Pride its biggest lead of the game at 22-16 with 4:30 left on the clock. The Camels closed out the half on a 4-0 run to head into the locker room down 22-20. With both teams playing active zone defenses, both squads struggled on the offensive side of the ball as they combined to shoot just 6-27 from beyond the arc in the first stanza.
The Camels opened up the second half on a 13-5 run spanning the first 7:44 of the second half to grab a 33-27 lead. Jeff Young nailed a pair of three’s to pace Connecticut College during the spurt. After another three from Billy Karis put the visitors up eight, 38-30, with 7:12 left, the Pride responded with a 7-1 run capped off by a Gibbs fast break layup.
After Shavar Bernier made just one of two from the charity stripe with 3:08 on the clock to give the Camels a three-point advantage, Gibbs once again cut the lead to one on yet another fast break bucket. However, the three-point shooting of the Camels proved to be the difference as a Young triple from the right corner gave the visitors a four-point lead they would not relinquish with 1:14 remaining.
The Pride dominated the paint in the game, outscoring Connecticut, 26-6, and owning a 12-3 advantage on second-chance points. The Pride outrebounded the Camels, 44-30, including a 22-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
Strawson finished with a team-best 11 points and 12 boards, while Gibbs added 10 points, five boards, and five assists. Strawson played terrific on the defensive end of the floor as well, holding Connecticut star Charles Stone to just seven points and eight rebounds.
Young tallied a game-high 14 points, going 4-of-8 from downtown. Christian Mosley added 11 points.
Springfield returns to action on Friday evening at 7:00 pm when it hosts No. 25 Rhode Island College at Blake Arena.
