Women's Volleyball Opens Hall of Fame Invitational With Two Wins

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 21, 2005 – Springfield College senior opposite Ashley Reves (Orchard Park, N.Y.) tallied a team-best 19 kills in two matches as the Pride defeated Bowdoin College and Bridgewater State College, 3-0, in day one of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday evening, October 21, in Blake Arena.

In the opening match, SC made quick work of the Polar Bears, downing Bowdoin 30-17, 30-16, and 30-16. Reves recorded a team-high 10 kills in the victory to go along with six digs and three service aces. Senior setter Alesia Vaccari (Winsted, Conn.) totaled a team-best 23 assists and four service aces, while also compiling five digs and four kills. In the digs department, junior libero Leah Hettrick (Meriden, Conn.) led the way with nine.

Bowdoin (11-12) was led by middle blocker Erin Prifogle, as the junior tallied a team-high nine kills for the Polar Bears in the match versus the Pride. Sophomore libero Jess Liu had 14 digs for Bowdoin in the loss.

In SC’s second match, against Bridgewater State, the Pride dropped the Bears 30-23, 30-14 and 30-23. SC was led by junior Jody Pfeifer (Northglenn, Colo.), as the outside hitter racked up 11 kills, four digs and two blocks. Vaccari recorded another 36 assists, and Hettrick compiled 22 digs. Junior middle blocker Rachael Witte (Utica, N.Y.) had a solid match for the Pride, chipping in with six kills, three blocks and three digs, while junior outside hitter Nicole Curtin (Beacon, N.Y.) contributed with nine kills and eight digs in match two.

The Bears (21-8) were led by sophomore middle hitter Kelsey Collasius with eight kills and two blocks, and senior outside hitter Melissa Machado recorded a team-high 15 digs for Bridgewater State.

SC improves its overall record to 23-5 on the season as it will begin play tomorrow afternoon, October 22, against the winner of Pool B (MIT, Amherst, Endicott, Bates) in Smith College’s Scott Gymnasium, beginning at noon.
