Men’s Gymnastics Ranks Among The Nations Elite In The Classroom
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Aug. 7, 2003 – The Springfield College men’s gymnastics team ranked sixth among Division I, II, and III institutions in the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Academic All-America program.SC, which recorded a 3.12 team grade-point average (g.p.a.) for the 2002-03 academic year, placed sixth nationally for the third year in a row. In 2000-01, the Pride finished tied for sixth with the University of Oklahoma with a 3.11 g.p.a. The following year SC recorded a 3.18 g.p.a.
The NACGC Academic All-America program honors institutions that offer men’s gymnastics at the Division I, II, and III levels. Individual Academic All-American honors were given to 48 student-athletes.
Six SC gymnasts earned individual honors by achieving a 3.5 g.p.a-or-higher and registering a minimum NCAA gymnastics score of 8.0 during the 2002-03 academic year. Leading the Pride was junior Mike Smith (Salt Lake City, Utah), whose 3.82 g.p.a. earned him a Verizon Academic District One College Division Men's At-Large Second Team selection earlier this year. The other five student-athletes recognized were sophomore Rob Sander (Colombia, Mont.), 3.77 g.p.a.; freshman Andrew Malaby (West Warwick, R.I.), 3.75 g.p.a.; junior Josh Chasse (Lewiston, Maine), 3.65 g.p.a.; senior Mathieu Perry (Agawam, Mass.), 3.57 g.p.a.; and senior Todd Brasington (Monticello, N.Y.), 3.52 g.p.a.
