KEENE, N.H., January 11, 2007 - For the second consecutive game, Springfield College junior forward Gregg Daly (Farmington, Conn.) equaled his career-high with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, but it was the Owls of Keene State College which defeated the Pride, 84-79, in non-conference play this evening at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Keene State's Tyler Kathan poured in a career-best 33 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to propel the Owls to their 12th victory of the season. Keene State improves to 12-1 overall with the win as SC falls to 6-9 overall.
Despite the loss, a total of five Pride players chipped in with double-figures on the night. Senior co-captain Anthony Pizzo (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored a season-best 15 points and corraled seven caroms. Sophomore forward Dan Falvey (Syracuse, N.Y.) netted a career-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field as junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) also added 13. Freshman forward Pat Crean (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) contributed with 10 points.
In the opening stanza, Keene State appeared to be in control when it raced out to a 15-point lead (39-24) with 2:12 to play. SC, however, was able to cut the margin to just eight points (39-31) at the break.
A game of runs continued in the second half. The Owls went up by 11 (73-62) on a pair of free throws by Kathan, who had 23 second-half points, with just 5:23 left in regulation. The Pride whittled the lead down to three points (77-74) on a conventional three-point play from Pizzo with 1:17 to go.
That would be as close as SC could get, although, as Keene State held on for the five-point victory, 84-79. The Pride will next return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action when it travels to the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon, January 13th, in a 1:00 p.m. start.
