Men's Basketball Downs Previously Unbeaten Trinity College, 76-72

Box Score/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – December 5, 2006 – Junior forward Gregg Daly scored 18 points off the bench, and freshman forward Pat Crean was perfect from the field and the free throw line on his way to a 17-point night in leading the Springfield College men’s basketball team to a 76-72 victory over previously unbeaten Trinity College tonight at SC’s Blake Arena.

With the win, Springfield is now 3-4, while Trinity falls to 7-1.

Daly, a 6-7 forward from Farmington, Conn., scored a career-high 18 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. He shot 8-of-11 from the field, and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

Crean, a 6-4 forward from Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., meanwhile, was even better shooting the ball, making 5-of-5 from the field, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-4 from the line. He also had three assists, three blocks, and one steal. In addition, senior forward Damian Farley (Natick, Mass.) scored 15 points, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

For the Bantams, senior guard Kino Clarke (Lauderhill, Fla.) scored a game-high 28 points, including 18 in the second half when Trinity made its run. Junior guard Patrick Hasiuk (Enfield, Conn.) scored 14 points and junior forward/center Russ Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored 12.

The game may have been decided in the first 2:47 as Springfield jumped out to an 11-0 lead. A Farley lay-up was then followed by a Farley three-pointer. Junior guard Jamaal Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) followed that with yet another three-pointer. Finally, Crean made the first of his three three-pointers, and the lead was 11-0.

SC continued to up the lead to as many as 16 points (19-3, then 21-5) on two occasions, the second with 10:29 remaining in the half.

Trinity then began a long, slow, but relentless comeback. By halftime, the lead was down to 10 at 36-26. The most noticeable statistic was the rebound figure, as SC led that battle, 29-9. Farley had scored 9 of his 15 in that half.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, the margin was anywhere between 10 and five points. But when SC freshman forward Ryan Blackmon (Stamford, Conn.) made a lay-up with 10:21 to go, it was back up to an 11-point lead at 55-44.

In the next 3:25, however, Trinity produced its best run of the game, outscoring the Pride, 14-4. When Hasiuk hit a three-pointer with 6:56 to go, the lead was down to one at 59-58. About 30 seconds later, Hasiuk had another three-point attempt that would have given Trinity its first lead. But it rimmed out and Daly came down with the rebound. Trinity never did claim a lead in this contest.

With 5:33 left, sophomore center John Strawson (Torrington, Conn.) made his lone basket of the game, a lay-up, giving SC a three-point edge. With 4:27 left, Crean hit a long three-pointer, and with 3:55 to go, Farley made two free throws. It was now 66-58, SC.

Trinity refused to go away quietly. On two occasions, the Bantams cut it to three, first on a three-pointer by Clarke with 2:33 to go, then on another trey by Clarke with 20 seconds left, 72-69.

A Gregg Daly dunk with eight seconds left gave SC a five-point margin (74-69). But another trey by Clarke cut it to two (74-72) with four seconds left. Finally, with 1.1 seconds left, Crean put it all to rest with two more free throws.

SC outrebounded Trinity, 40-23. SC also shot .542 from the floor (26-of-48), .556 from behind the three-point line (5-of-9), and a near-perfect .950 from the free throw line (19-of-20). Trinity’s undoing may have come in the first half when it shot .313 from the floor (10-of-32). Overall, Trinity shot .400 (26-of-65). Keeping Trinity in the game was its very low total of seven turnovers (SC had 18). Trinity also had nine blocks, including four by Martin.

Up next for SC is another NESCAC school, Williams, at home this Saturday (Dec. 9) at 7 pm.
