Women's Soccer Downs Castleton St., 3-0, In NCAA Div. III First Round
BoxscoreSPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 9, 2005 – Springfield College junior forward Annemarie Goodwin (Springfield, Mass.) scored two second half goals, her sixth and seventh scores of the season, as the Pride defeated Castleton State College, 3-0, in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Tournament this evening (Nov. 9) at Brock-Affleck Field.
“Needless to say, I'm very pleased,” said SC Head Coach John Gibson, recently named NEWMAC Coach of the Year. “It's been a year of firsts, being able to advance past Wheaton to claim a NEWMAC title, to play in the NCAA Tournament, and now to win an NCAA tourney game. It feels great to make it through this hurdle. Of course, our reward is to play at the buzz saw of what is Oneonta State. But, we'll be ready. I was impressed with Castleton State, their coach, and their team concept of play. But overall, the weather held off at the end, and the crowd was fantastic. What more could you ask for.”
SC (14-4-3) started the scoring early in this one, as senior forward Amanda Nealon (Falmouth, Mass.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season off a nice feed from classmate Courtney Goetz (Flemington, N.J.) in the 13th minute of action (12:21). The score remained 1-0 heading into the break.
The second half was all Goodwin, as the junior netted a header in the 60th minute of play (59:26) to put the Pride up 2-0. Junior midfielder Jenn McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y.) dropped a long cross into the box as sophomore midfielder Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.) headed a ball to Goodwin for the score. McBride and Bugbee were both credited with assists on the well-executed play.
At the 89:04 mark, Goodwin added a late insurance goal for SC, beating Castleton’s goalie, Kim Allen, with a low shot just inside the left post. Allen made five saves in net for the Spartans (15-5-2).
“We played hard, but we just couldn't get it going,” said Castleton State Head Coach Chris Chapdelaine. “We had a chance or two early, and had we taken advantage and gone ahead 1-0, perhaps that could have made a difference the other way. But I have to give credit to Springfield for a great game. They were outstanding.”
SC, which has remained unbeaten in its past 12 contests, will next head to Oneonta, N.Y., for a second round match-up with Oneonta State on Saturday afternoon, November 12, in a 1:00 p.m. start. Oneonta State won the NCAA Division III Tournament back in 2003.

Head Coach John Gibson
John Gibson, a native of London, England, enters his ninth season as head women's soccer at Springfield College. Gibson has led the Pride to numerous post-season bids and three trips to the conference championship match, as well as the program’s first Division III national ranking. His clubs have registered an impressive a 94-52-12 record.
